Jesse Lingard's loan move to Newcastle in doubt but further talks planned

Jesse Lingard's loan move to Newcastle United is in doubt after negotiations with Man Utd stalled, but 90min understands that further talks are expected within 48 hours.

The midfielder has been a bit-part player at United this season making just 14 appearances in all competitions. This is despite impressing on loan at West Ham during the second half of the 2020/21 campaign, where his performances saw him only narrowly miss out on England's Euro 2020 squad.

Lingard - whose contract expires at the end of the season after he failed to sign fresh terms in the summer - is hopeful that another temporary switch this term could see him impress Southgate once again.

A move to Newcastle had seemed likely but 90min understands that talks between all parties collapsed on Tuesday.

The Magpies had been willing to pay a hefty £10m loan fee for Lingard's services until the end of the season, as well as making him the highest-paid player at St James' Park.

However, talks have broken down, though negotiations could kick off again in the near future. Although the offer for Lingard is extremely attractive, United are not keen on letting the midfielder leave when Premier League squads are regularly being decimated by coronavirus.

The player himself was reportedly 'angered' by the Red Devils blocking his departure, though 90min understands that he is not entirely convinced that a move to Newcastle is the right one.

With hopes of signing Lingard fading, the Magpies are stepping up negotiations with Tottenham over the signing of Dele Alli. Newcastle would not necessarily be against signing both players if possible, but they are also exploring loan moves for English-based defenders and Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
