JUST ASK BECKS

Becks doesn't mind being considered a veteran of the England national team at the age of 27.

The media has been going wild with reports of David Beckham acting as a minder for scouse thief Wayne Rooney. Speaking before this evenings game he said:

"The whole 'father figure' thing did make me laugh and it feels a bit weird being on the other side of the fence where as a 27-year-old I am one of the eldest people in the squad."

"People tell me Wayne was 10 when I made my England debut and that makes me feel old.

"But it was the same when I came into the England for the first time and if I had a problem I would go to Alan Shearer and the older players.

"I am sure that if Wayne or the other young lads have got something they want to talk about then I'd like to think that they can come to me or the other older lads.

Meanwhile David Beckham has defended England coach Sven Goran Eriksson about his policy of picking youngsters for friendlies and changing the team completely after half time.

Speaking before the pointless friendly against Australia Becks told Sky sports

"At this point of the season you can't afford the older members to play full a match," he told Sky Sports News.

"The manager and the staff are doing the right things, because it gives the youngsters coming into the squad a great chance to perform and it gives the players who have got the big games coming up the chance to rest.

"It's always great to see youngsters coming through. There's no doubt the young lads deserve to be here. Given the talent they've shown week in week out for the clubs, they definitely deserve to be here."
