MANCHESTER United midfielder Roy Keane’s controversial autobiography is to go head-to-head with two of literature’s most acclaimed writers for the Book of the Year award.

The autobiography, co-written with Irish journalist Eamon Dunphy, has been nominated for top honours in this year’s British Book Awards, one of the most prestigious gongs in the industry.

Ian McEwan’s acclaimed upper-middle class family secrets novel Attonement, and the 2002 Booker Prize winner Life of Pi, by Yan Martel are also nominated in the top award category

Martel said: "I never thought I would be competing for a major book prize against a football player. But why not? Everyone has something to say."
