A letter published in the MEN last night, in response to City's claim (which we published last week) as having the largest neon signs in Manchester.

Lights fantastic -2

Your reporter Trevor Baxter (M.E.N., July 8) stated that Manchester City were to erect two neon signs, believed to be the largest in Manchester, before the big match against FC Porto on August 12.

It is a well known fact among football fans that City used to boast the tallest floodlights in the land, at their old Maine Road ground - not to mention the widest pitch in England, Europe and possibly even the world.

But to claim to have the "largest" neon lights in Manchester, I feel, is a little unrealistic. I doubt if there are larger neon lights than the ones at Kelloggs in Trafford Park.

Perhaps someone could check?

Here's the atricle we published on July 9:

MASSIVE, HUGE, GARGANTUAN, IMMENSE...........

City install huge neon sign at the Bell end.

From Citeh's official website:

The City of Manchester Stadium is already gearing up for the forthcoming season with the installation of huge new signs on the both sides of the stadium.

The neon lettering, in blue, of course, that reads 'Manchester City Football Club' has just been hoisted into place on the outside of the Colin Bell Stand. The same wording is about to be put into position on the East Stand, giving the Club the two largest neon signs in Manchester.

Ed. This now officially replaces the 'biggest floodlights/biggest pitch' in the Book of Bitter Boasts.
