"We just see it as another stage of our development and on-going commitment to keeping United at the top both in the Premiership and in Europe.

"We are convinced that the business we have done makes us stronger and our objectives are as clear as they have ever been. Those are to give the fans and the investors at this club a squad that will keep its position as one of the most powerful and successful at home and abroad.

"The money we get from the Beckham deal will be re-invested in the team.

"The financial strength of this club is important in the current market place and that's why the deal to sell David was a good one for the club and its future.

"We have our targets and we are working towards securing those as quickly as we can but we won't be silly about it because we don't have to be.

"We will be realistic on the values of players we are interested in, bearing in mind the current market. We won't be held to ransom just because we are one of the few clubs currently active in the market.

"Not many deals are being done, so just because we are in the market for players doesn't mean we will be paying silly money."
