SAF: "I don’t think Arsenal wanted to go (to such a meeting), did they? I don’t think they wanted to get involved. Arsène (Wenger) would have been too embarrassed, wouldn’t he?

Asked whether he would be saying anything different to his players to help make Wednesday’s encounter a calmer affair than its Premiership predecessor, Ferguson’s response was: "Why? We didn’t do anything wrong in that last game, so there’s nothing I can say to my players that would change anything. Our behaviour was right. We have excellent discipline and I have no worries on that score."

An FA source said: "There is little point in forcing a meeting if, as it seems, both clubs recognise the importance of resolving the issue. If a meeting can be held, so much the better, but it is not something we are in a rush to do."
