Micky Thomas on Sky Sports News:

"The manager is one of the best in the world and whatever
decision he made was the best for the football club. The one
man the fans have to back is Sir Alex Ferguson. I am sure he
already has a replacement in mind and I am sure the people
coming through the door will be top class.”

Lou Macari:

“The powers that be at Old Trafford believe this is the time
to cash in. I am a great believer in Sir Alex's ability. He
knows when players should move on from Old Trafford. It is
very rare former players leave Old Trafford and come back to
haunt them and I don't believe Beckham will either. I think
one of the main reasons they have been wanting him out of
the door was because that money they will get for him will
be used to bring in two or three players.”

John Toshack backs Fergie:

“Wearing my manager's hat, I am 100 per cent behind him. I
have been there before. Selling Beckham at this stage makes
financial sense because, in two years' time, he could leave
United for nothing. Wisely, Fergie has said nothing so far.
These are occasions when a manager has to suffer in silence.
And let's face it, if you are flogging a horse you don't
tell the buyer it has no teeth. The signs were there last
season that Beckham is not indispensable. I don't believe it
was a coincidence he was left out of big games - against
Real, Newcastle, Arsenal and Liverpool - when United hardly
missed him. Fergie wants the European Cup more than anything
and realises he has to change the team to achieve that. If
the money raised from selling Becks enables him to bring in
the two or three recruits he wants, the critics will soon
pipe down."

Bryan Robson:

"If the boss gets something in his mind he will stick to the
decision."

Paddy Crerand:

"What will disappoint the fans is that Becks is leaving not
a happy bunny. Real's defence is shocking - why they have
bought another midfielder mystifies me."

Clayton Blackmore:

"The football club is the main thing. The manager has to
look after its best interests. Becks has been brilliant for
United and I am sure he will do well for Real Madrid."

Paul Parker:

“Whenever top people leave others have questioned, but the
club have gone on and won doubles and trebles. Sir Alex
Ferguson's record speaks for itself. He got rid of Mark
Hughes and people said 'who's going to replace him?' Then
Andy Cole comes in and sets a new goalscoring record. It
will put the wind up the other players as well, the gaffer
is fearless. This a major challenge for Beckham, it's a big
test for him. I watched Real play on Sunday and they play
with so much pace, I wonder how he can be a regular in that
side because he doesn't play that way. But maybe they are
looking for a new dimension. If he proves himself over there
he deserves every credit he gets."

Joe Jordan with a message for the fans:

"They've got to back the manager. The manager knows what's
best"

Paul McGrath:

“I hope his agents are smart enough to have something
written into his contract to ensure he gets a game. I think
he is a good enough player and once he settles down I am
sure his talent will shine through and he will be a good
player at Real Madrid.

"At David's age maybe taking the money will be a good deal
for Manchester United Football Club. I think getting that
amount of money for David at this stage, when in two years'
time he could walk out without any money changing hands, is
shrewd business. But what he has done for the club it could
have been handled better. I thought it was handled a little
badly.

“David has given his all for Manchester United and is a
massive name but Alex has always said no-one is bigger than
Manchester United and if anyone was ever going to head that
way it was David Beckham. It probably just got a little bit
too big and Alex needed to put a stop to that because it
diminishes the other players' values. He decided that David
should be let go for a lot of money so that is a shrewd bit
of business for both sides. David is the loser in this
because I don't think he wanted to leave and wanted to see
out his career at this club."

Kenny Dalglish:

"I'm not privy to all the information. But I just know that
Beckham is a brilliant player. Wherever he's been at -
Manchester United and England - he has made massive
contributions. Alex Ferguson has been a success in
management because he's made decisions and got most of them
right and more often than anyone else. So, if Alex made the
decision that David has got to go then only time will tell
whether he has got another one right or not. But certainly,
with his track record, you wouldn't back against him. David
Beckham will be really disappointed because he loves
Manchester United and he's been brought through the ranks
there. He's got a better chance of succeeding than you and
me"
