Lisandro Martinez Man Utd shirt number revealed

Lisandro Martinez has officially been handed his new shirt number by Manchester United.

Martinez's €55m transfer from Ajax was finally confirmed on Wednesday, but until now United had kept his squad number under wraps.

It has now been confirmed that he will take the number six shirt. That number was most recently worn by Pogba, who rejoined Juventus on a free transfer this summer following the expiration of his United contract.

In the past, Jonny Evans and Wes Brown have also used the number six, as did Rio Ferdinand - albeit for just one season before switching to five.

United favourite Jaap Stam wore number six between 1998 and 2001, and the legendary Duncan Edwards used it in the past as well.

Interestingly, Martinez has spurned the opportunity to retain the number 21 shirt that he used at Ajax - which is currently vacant at Old Trafford following Edinson Cavani's departure.

Optimistic United fans will be hoping that he has done this to leave the jersey open for Frenkie de Jong, who has been strongly linked with a move to the Red Devils.

The club remain interested in De Jong, but the move is being slowed down by contractual disputes between the Dutchman and Barcelona.

The midfielder previously agreed to defer more than £17m of his wages and they were set to be paid back from this season until the end of his contract in 2026. Barça are yet to decide how this would work should De Jong be sold this summer.

If the 21 shirt isn't being reserved for De Jong, it could be taken by Christian Eriksen, who wore this number during his half-season at Brentford.
