Last night's London Evening Standard reported that United are to bid up to £20m to sign Carrick from Spurs. And to think he was available from West Ham for around £2m. United's management was probably on holiday at the time.

Meanwhile the Evening News reports:

Ferguson is pondering whether to increase his bid to £15m to bring Michael Carrick to Manchester United.

The value of Carrick, who is 25 next month, is on the up after his influential World Cup debut for England against Ecuador last Sunday.

Fergie is aware that once the Reds show their intentions – and they did have an initial £10m bid rejected by Tottenham early this month – other clubs will begin to take notice and could drive up the price.
