MANAGER'S QUOTES

Ferguson:

"It was a rousing game, there's no question about that. They worked really hard for their point.

"It's disappointing that we were twice in front.

"The defending on the second goal in particular was very poor. We can't accept that defending. I don't think we can make excuses for Silvestre and Brown being out and having to play Kieran [Richardson] at left-back. We really should be doing better.

"I think Birmingham did show a great spirit and I think they have to if they want to survive.

"In fairness, we had a lot of chances to finish it off and I had a worry within myself at 2-1 when we didn't get the third goal that we could suffer for it."

He is pleased for Solksjaer:

"I am delighted for him and he did well. He was only on for eight or nine minutes but he showed a real enthusiasm to play and he showed no ill effects to be honest.

"You have got to remember he has been out for 19 months so we have got to be pleased with that and hopefully that is him back for good."

He was unhappy with the non-award of a foul on Ronaldo by St Nick of Gorton just before the first equaliser:

"I think they [referees] have a problem with Ronaldo.

"The crowds seem to boo him every time he touches the ball and referees seem to respond to that.

"Nicky Butt clearly fouled Cristiano in the build up to Birmingham's first goal. Referees should do their job and not listen to the crowd, but it is a problem for us with Ronaldo."

Bruce:

"It was a wonderful game of football. You're playing against as good a team as there is in Europe and you need your team to turn up.

"They did, they had a right good go and got a result that I think we deserved.

"I thought we gave as good as we got. It was a great game of football and to be fair, we couldn't have got anything else out of the players."
