Manchester United Goalkeeper Sergio Romero Unhurt After Car Crash

Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero was involved in a car accident on his way to training on Monday morning when his white Lamborghini came off the road and crashed through a barrier at the side of the road near the club’s Carrington training ground.

Thankfully, the 32-year-old stopper is unhurt and has not suffered any injuries, the club has confirmed to media outlets in the wake of the crash.

Pictures from the scene show Romero’s car wedged front first under the barriers by the side of the road. Dressed in an orange gilet, black hoody and light trousers, Romero is also seen in other images stood by the vehicle and inspecting the damage.

A loyal understudy to David de Gea since arriving as a free agent in 2015, Romero has played in nine games in all competitions for United so far this season, exclusively in the Europa League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup. He has seven clean sheets from those appearances.

Overall, Romero has kept 34 clean sheets in 53 United appearances to date, conceding only 24 times. But he hasn’t actually played in the Premier League since May 2018.

Romero, who will celebrate his 33rd birthday next month, remains under contract until the end of next season. The club also holds an option to extend that deal until June 2022, by which time the 96-cap Argentina international will be 35 years of age.

Aside from Romero as back-up to De Gea, United also have veteran third-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant, and emerging Czech talent Matej Kovar, who was on the bench against Astana earlier this season when manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named a largely teenage side.

Dean Henderson also remains contract to United and is currently enjoying a second season on loan with Sheffield United. The 22-year-old has had an impressive campaign and is in with a chance of being selected for England’s Euro 2020 squad this coming summer.
