Manchester United officially complete signing of Raphael Varane

Manchester United have formally announced the signing of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, on a four-year contract.

The 13-time Premier League champions confirmed late last month that they had struck a deal in principle with Real for the French centre back, 28, and following a number of delays he has now put pen to paper on his United contract.

United have paid an initial fee of £34m, which could rise to £42m dependent on add ons. United managed to strike a deal for the player due to him being in the final year of his contract in the Spanish capital, making clear that a new challenge was what he wanted.

Speaking to the club's official website, Varane stated that is keen to win silverware at Old Trafford:

“There is a lot more that I want to achieve in my career and I know I’m joining a squad full of great players who will all have the same determination to win matches and trophies. Having spoken to the manager I can see how much progress has been made over the last few seasons and I now join a group ready to play at the highest level.

“I want to make an impact here and I will give everything to become part of this club’s illustrious history.

“Manchester United is one of the most iconic clubs in world football and the chance to come here and play in the Premier League is something I couldn’t turn down."

The defender will wear the number 19 shirt at the Red Devils after it was vacated by Amad Diallo on Friday.
