Manchester United have triggered the one-year extension in Timothy Fosu-Mensah contract.
The defender has not played for United since the final day of the 2016/2017 season due a combination of injury and a series of loan moves.
Fosu-Mensah has spent the previous two campaigns at Crystal Palace and Fulham respectively, enduring a torrid time at the latter.
The Netherlands international spent time ostracised from the squad under Claudio Ranieri and suffered a season ending ACL injury in April - just as he had forced his way back into the side.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United believe that the 22-year-old has a future at the club – although a cynic might suggest they're keen to extract some value for him by selling him at the end of the season – and they have exercised a one-year extension in his contract. Prior to this, his deal was set to expire in the summer.
Fosu-Mensah arrived at Old Trafford in 2014 from Ajax's well regarded youth team, making 21 first team appearances for the Red Devils since. He played a handful of games during his side's run to the Europa League final in 2017 under José Mourinho.
United defeated his former club Ajax to lift the trophy, with the youngster receiving a medal as an unused substitute.
His most consistent period as a first teamer came at Palace, making 24 appearances in all competitions as the Eagles secured an 11th placed finish in the Premier League.
News of Fosu-Mensah's extension comes after similar clauses in Nemanja Matic and Eric Bailly's contracts were activated, though United remain in talks with Matic over a longer deal.
This leaves Angel Gomes as the only first-team player out of contract at the end of the season. It is understood that the club do not have the option of triggering an automatic extension.
Gomes has made just eight appearances this season, with United fans left frustrated at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over his lack of playing time.
