Marcus Rashford will decide if he needs shoulder surgery after Euro 2020

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has admitted that he will decide after Euro 2020 if he needs shoulder surgery to heal a longstanding problem that has been affecting his form.

However, going under the knife at any point this summer would likely see him miss all of what was already going to be a delayed and shortened pre-season and perhaps also the start of the new campaign itself while he recovers.

With England into the knockout stages of Euro 2020, Rashford won’t be released from international duty until the end of June at the very earliest. But it could be mid-July if they remain in the competition until the final.

Rashford hinted he is likely to hold off any decision on possible surgery until after he has had a summer break and resumes training again to assess how he feels. It could already be into August by then and the Premier League campaign due to begin on the weekend of 14/15 August.

Yet Rashford has clearly not been at his best for a while and looked utterly exhausted by the end of the 2020/21 season in May. He is known to have not been fully fit for a long time and it has showed in his performances.

“I don’t think that’s a secret to be honest with you. Obviously, I am not performing at my best and what I know I can perform to,” the player is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror as he discussed his longstanding shoulder problem and fitness.

“I’m not 100 percent sure if I need it yet. I’ll finish strong here [with England] and I’ve got a few weeks off to just relax and then decide what I’m going to do.”
