Wayne Rooney (fractured foot) is out for two months and with neither Ole Gunnar Solskjaer nor Louis Saha likely to start after only returning to training last week following long-term injuries, Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo will be asked to provide striking support to the Argentina forward.

Nani may have to be content with a place on the bench and while Owen Hargreaves might hope to be involved, fellow new arrival Anderson may have to wait for his first taste of competitive action.

Mikael Silvestre is a major doubt after limping out of the Reading draw.

Harry Redknapp:

"I think Alex knows it's always a difficult place to come and he knows they'll have to play well to beat us, but I'm sure he's confident that he's got a squad that can beat anybody,

More:

"You can't just defend against them," he said. "But you can only attack them when you get the ball. And when you are counter-attacking them is when you are most vulnerable. They can kill you on the counter-attack."

Portsmouth's Kanu:

"It just seems we know how to play against them when we are at home. We get an extra power."

The Times:

Sir Alex Ferguson may be able to replace like for like in the absence of the injured Wayne Rooney by giving Carlos Tévez his long-awaited Manchester United debut away to Portsmouth this evening, but, as Sven-Göran Eriksson knows only too well, that is not a luxury afforded the England head coach.

With the disappointment of losing Rooney for about two months with a fractured foot likely to be offset by the sight of Tévez charging around Fratton Park in United colours, it was with an understandable air of confidence that Ferguson claimed that there was no need for supporters "to panic", but it is unlikely that Steve McClaren will be feeling the same way.
