MATCH QUOTES

Rooney:

"There have been one or two comments about one team being in it but it’s rubbish really. This is a good start to the season but we have keep it going.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game but it was a good performance by us. The game could have gone either way but the second goal killed them off.

"Joseph Yobo is a great player. I was just looking to close David Weir down and lucky enough it fell right into my path.

"I'm fine, I'm a footballer with Manchester United and it's no problem coming back here. The fans are giving me stick but it's part and parcel of the game.

"I feel fit and sharp so, hopefully, I can carry on doing it for Manchester United this season and take it into the World Cup."

Fergie:

"We got a result I don’t think many sides will get here this season. We dropped too many points against the bottom six last season. We got off to a terrible start and never recovered really.

"We knew it would be a very tough game and it was.

"But to be fair to the lads they got stuck in and got the goals at the right time - just before half-time and just after.

"Ruud has been in fantastic form in pre-season. Edwin showed his experience, he calmed the game down. He made a great save in the first half, and one in the second half. All in all, his composure calmed us down.

"We knew it was going to be a tough day and it was that way but, in fairness to the lads, they got stuck in and we got the goals at the right time, in fairness, and that took the wind out of their sails really.

"We carried on from Tuesday, goalscorers are creatures who want to score all the time; they both notched today and they were important goals for us.

"Edwin proved his experience and showed his composure. At times, he calmed the game down and did it well. It was a great save in the first half and, I think, a good one in the second half but my view was blocked a little bit. His composure helped us through it.

"Park's tenacity and running was excellent, he was always a threat in terms of penetration and will be pleased with his performance."

Moyes:

I have not gone in there to rant and rave because I think the players did a good job.

"But when you play against the better teams you have to take your chances when you get the opportunities.

"You are not going to get eight or nine chances.

"You are only going to get a couple, so you have to be clinical.

"We found that out to our cost in midweek and we found it out again today. Tim Cahill, for instance, had two or three good opportunities. I thought he should have scored at least one, certainly his first chance.

"But he is claiming he was pushed in the back, which meant he couldn't get a clean header.

"And then when we lost a goal so early in the second half it was a long, long way to come back. United are a great side and they are so good at keeping the ball."
