MATCH QUOTES

Fergie:

"When you get to 60 minutes, you're just hoping the goal comes.

"In the second half we upped the speed of our game, which made a big difference and Ruud has been fantastic.

"There are goals here - I can smell them. We had some chances and their defence and keeper Thomas Sorensen had fantastic games. One-nil at home early in the season against a team who made it difficult for us is fine. They kept us from getting real momentum.

"It is important for the team that Ruud scores because once he gets on a run he is unstoppable.

"His fitness in pre-season has been fantastic and we are getting the benefit of that.

"Ruud's last season was fragmented and it was partly our fault for bringing him back too early. But in his first two seasons in England he scored 36 and 44 goals and he is capable of doing that again."

Referring to today's match:"I cannot get excited about Arsenal and Chelsea.

"I will watch it as I normally would on a Sunday and I suppose I hope they both lose.

"The important thing is we have won and kept three clean sheets on the trot. That gives us tremendous confidence."

Ruud:

"I didn't think I played that well football-wise but as a striker it is always nice to score," said Van Nistelrooy, like Park a former PSV Eindhoven player.

"Three goals in three games is a great start for me. It was important for me to start scoring and thankfully I was in the right place at the right time to finish it off."

Fletcher:

A 1-0 win doesn't tell the story. Villa sat behind the ball but we knew if we kept passing the goal would come.

"Everyone gets frustrated but we tried to be patient, not get too direct, just keep passing. We've got used to the way teams play at Old Trafford.

"It's six points out of six and a good start. We have hit the ground running, ground out a result, and now we have to keep things going.

"Ruud is flying just now and he finished off a good move. He just had to tap it home but he is all about scoring goals and has done that.

O'Dreary:

"I am an attack-minded coach and like to take people on, but circumstances dictated my plans because we had a few players injured.

"We defended really well until Olof Mellberg made a mistake and we gave a stupid ball away.

"Everyone is working to bring players in, and not just a striker [alluding to Baros]. Within the budget we are trying to do that."
