MATCH QUOTES

Ferguson:

"It was a fantastic result. We had a lot of narrow escapes and Liverpool upset our rhythm. They will feel very unlucky and they deserve to.

"It is a massive result for us. We broke away late on against Fulham and scored and now we've done it here. We've had that bit of luck in the last two weeks but you need luck if you are to win titles.

"There is a 12-point difference [now 9 after Chelsea's win later in the day] but I don't think anything is impossible in modern-day football. In 1998 we had a great lead going into an Arsenal match but we had some terrible injuries. The pool then was nothing like as strong as it is today though. That helps us.

"Liverpool's pressing disrupted our rhythm.

"They'll be feeling very unlucky today and I think they were. We broke away in the last couple of minutes last week to score [Fulham] and we did it again today."

About Scholes' sending off:

"I'm not sure what happened with Scholes but it`s a disappointment for us.

"He's lifted his hand and you can't do that. I think the referee got one right in terms of intent."

And Rooney's injury:

"It looks like a knee injury but we'll have to see tomorrow."

Giggs on MUTV:

"The defence won us the match. We know if we can keep a clean sheet we'll always get chances and that's what happened.

"We didn't play particularly well and didn't create too many chances mainly because Liverpool dominated the game. But we always had that feeling that if we did get an opportunity in the second half we'd put it away and that's what we did.

"When we went down to ten men after Scholesy's sending off, I think we would have taken a point. You're always going to be up against it when you're a man short.

"But we managed to grind out the result. We got a lucky break when the ball dropped to Sheasy and thankfully he was able to put it away.

"You're not always going to play well," added the Welshman. "It's not the four or five nil victories that win you Championships, it's these type of results where you have to dig out a win. We did it at Fulham and we've done it again at Anfield which is a great feeling."

"We'd have probably settled for four points out of six from the two games with Fulham and Liverpool.

"So to get six points from two difficult away matches is brilliant. There's still a long way to go but Chelsea are running out games now."

O'Shea:

"It is definitely the most important goal of my career.

"It is the stuff dreams are made of. One of the lads told me to make sure I got a picture of the goal. It is something I will cherish.

"To score in the last minute in front of The Kop is special. It keeps our advantage at the top and puts pressure on the chasing teams.

"We deserve credit for pushing players into the box late on. Ronaldo put in a great freekick that caused their keeper lots of problems and, thankfully, I was able to put it in. The manager told us that if we were going to die we would die doing it our way."

Rooney:

"It's so sweet."

Benitez:

"I would have trouble explaining how we lost that in Spanish; in English I find it almost impossible.

"We dominated the game, were in control and had plenty of attacks. Sometimes football is all about luck. When you have so much of the play and make chances without scoring, you must be careful against a team as good as United.

"United have a great defence and a fine goalkeeper. He stopped one from Peter Crouch at the end everyone felt was going in. But although we had so much of the game, we did not make too many chances.

"The decision to disallow Craig Bellamy's effort in the first half for offside was right. It just was not our day.

"United are really close to the title now. Chelsea are a good team, but they cannot make mistakes now because United will continue to win."
