Fergie:

"I apologise to the fans because they didn't deserve that, they deserve more than that.

"The quality was poor, the quality that's here every week wasn't there. We got into great scoring opportunities, but it was Exeter's day and there's nothing we can do about that.

'It was Exeter's day, but in 18 years at this club this was without doubt the worst performance in the FA Cup. I can only apologise to the fans because they deserve better.

'We will be playing a much stronger team in the replay and will not make the same mistakes again. I am just delighted to be in the hat for the next round.

'Our best player today was David Jones, a 19-year-old. He at least showed me he was a player who likes to win. Maybe I should have brought Smith and Scholes on at half-time but I expect better from my youth players.'

Andy Taylor (former United trainee now with Exeter):

'I didn't get a chance to get into the first team when I was here and to play today was unbelievable. I thought the free-kick was in, I saw the net ripple but unfortunately it was the wrong side of the post. I spoke to Paul Scholes afterwards and he said I was unlucky with my effort.'

Alex Inglethorpe (Exeter manager):

'My main emotion is one of pride. It was a real honour to play here, against what many consider to be the greatest team in the world, and come away with a result. Sir Alex was very complimentary about the way we played.

'We always knew that if we got off to a good start we would grow in confidence and I thought from the first man to the last, my players were fantastic.

'The starting line -up still contained many big names and the fact they finished off with Ronaldo, Scholes and Smith on the pitch tells you the respect they showed us.

'The game changed when they came on and we didn't see the ball again. That was what we expected, but I thought we showed an enormous effort of concentration.'
