From the MEN:

Former Reds star Danny Wallace has been forced to shelve his bid to compete in this year's London Marathon. The 41-year-old former United, Southampton and England winger has been waging his own personal battle against multiple sclerosis and intended to complete the gruelling 26-mile course, even though it would take him at least four days.

However, after giving himself just four weeks to get ready for the task, Wallace, who can get exhausted walking just 100 yards with a stick, has been advised by his doctors to pull out.

"Maybe I was a bit naive in thinking I could do it in four days after such a short build-up," he said.

"I rushed into it a little bit and my training hasn't been to the standard I would have liked, so I have listened to the advice of my doctors and decided to pull out.

"It is disappointing and I feel as though I am letting people down but I definitely intend to compete next year, by which time I will have had chance to prepare properly.

"I want to do something to raise awareness of MS as well as raising money. Hopefully I can build myself up over the next year and have a real go at completing the marathon.”
