Mino Raiola explains why Erling Haaland chose Borussia Dortmund over Man Utd

Mino Raiola has explained why Erling Haaland decided to sign for Borussia Dortmund instead of Manchester United in the 2020 January transfer window.

Before he joined BVB in January, every top club in Europe was interested in Haaland after he broke several goalscoring records during his time with Red Bull Salzburg.

United were thought to be leading the race for his signature in the months leading up to the window, but in the end Dortmund got their man.

Since arriving in Germany Haaland has more than justified his price tag, averaging a goal per game in 51 Bundesliga appearances so far - 74 goals in 72 games in all competitions.

He is widely expected to leave the club in the summer for considerably more than the €20m Dortmund paid. He has a release clause of €75m (£64m) which kicks in next year, but as reported by 90min last month, BVB are hopeful of getting more than that if they agree to accept installments.

During an interview with Sport1, Raiola - who is Haaland's agent - explained why the player opted for Dortmund over United, praising sporting director Michael Zorc for his handling of the deal.

"Negotiations with him were persistent. But it is Zorc's credit that Erling plays at BVB today," he said.

"I am a car fan. When you have a choice between a Mercedes S63 AMG or an Audi RS6, that's difficult, isn't it? Both are good cars.

"Erling was faced with the decision at the time. And Zorc clearly demonstrated the advantages of his S63 AMG over the RS6. He sold the club in such a way that Erling said: 'I'll see myself there. I can develop here.'

"BVB has developed enormously. He can be an example for the international football world. Dortmund bring absolute super talents. Back then they had the balls to sign someone like Erling, who was still quite unknown, but cost a lot of money.

"Haaland, [Jude] Bellingham, [Jadon] Sancho, these are major investments that are worthwhile. If they had hesitated a year, they could never have bought these players. Now everyone looks appreciatively at Dortmund."
