MORE BECKORAMA

Mikael Silvestre in the Sun:

“It won't change the balance of the team very much.
Ronaldinho and Beckham do not play in the same position. I
have not got a clue about Beckham's transfer but what I can
say is United have always been very wise in their recruiting
from one season to the next. There are only one or two
players signed and the signings are carefully made.”

Laporta won the election last night and told reporters:

“I'm very happy to win the election. Today I am celebrating,
we will talk about Beckham later. I can't be sure that we
are going to sign Beckham. We hope to meet with his
representatives and show them that Barcelona would be the
best for Beckham. We are confident. We are waiting to hear
from his representatives, we will speak with them tomorrow.”

But speaking to the BBC, he says he cannot guarantee that
Beckham will sign:

“I did not promise to bring David Beckham to Barcelona. I
said I had an agreement with Manchester United that
contained conditions. One of those conditions was that I
became president of the club. I have now done that.

“To make a strong football team it is very important we have
players like David Beckham. I know it is a difficult
decision for Beckham and his family but I know he would be
delighted to be in our city, our team, our country.

“We are waiting to hear from Beckham. We completed the first
stage of the transfer by winning this election, now we will
speak to Beckham`s representatives.”

George Best feels sorry for Becks, speaking in the Daily
Beckham (aka The Sun) he said:

“Beckham seems to be piggy in the middle and it is not fair
to someone who has given so much loyalty to one club when
loyalty is so rare these days. He has certainly been loyal
to Manchester United and I think he has been treated
abysmally.

“He can be the boss. He still has quite a bit of time to go
on his contract, so can sit it out if he wants to. If I was
him, I would dig my heels in and go back. Whether they play
him or not is simply another decision the club have to make.
I have a slight feeling he will still be there at the start
of next season. From Manchester United's, and David's, point
of view I hope so.”

Inter Milan defender Marco Materazzi would like to see
Beckham play for them:

"Only our directors can decide that," Materazzi said on
Inter’s website

"However, it is impossible to deny that with two strikers
with brilliant ability in the air like Vieri and Crespo a
wide player like Beckham with the talent and ability to get
to the byline and make crosses would be useful.”

Economic genius Peter Ridsdale gets his name in the papers:

“There have been signs for some time that the relationship
between Beckham and Sir Alex has changed. For example,
Beckham sat on the bench for the game at Arsenal. Now it
appears Sir Alex has decided it's time to freshen up his
squad.

"That's my personal opinion. It's my view from the outside,
having observed the last few months of the football season.
It seems Man U have decided it's time to cash in - and
there's lots of cash on the table.

"If I was there, I would keep him. I think he's a fantastic
ambassador for Manchester United and English football. And a
player is contracted for a period of time - so if David says
he'll stay for the two years remaining on his contract,
that's up to him. But whether he plays is another thing."

Jordi Cruyff is up next:

"David Beckham is the best possible investment Barcelona
could make in the world of football. Barcelona desperately
need two world-class players, not only to win games and
trophies, but to give pride and self-belief back to the fans
and I think Beckham has to be one of them. David is perfect
on every level for this club - sporting, marketing,
economically and in the social relations between the team
and its supporters.

“David brings you a guarantee that he will either make or
score at least 25 per cent of your goals every season. He
crosses brilliantly, he scores from open play and he is
almost infallible from direct free-kicks. What is more, he
has changed as a player since Sven Goran Eriksson took over
as England manager. It's clear he is a genuine leader of the
team but people sometimes don't notice his excellent work-
rate.

"An investment in Beckham will always be returned to you in
a few years because he sells more merchandising than most
teams do put together. David is capable of making the club
competitive again at a world level.

"And when the name of Barca becomes talked about across the
world again, everything they have invested in buying him
will be paid back and people will then start to realise his
signing was an act of genius."

Former Barca boss Sir Bobby Robson:

"David Beckham will be every bit as huge an icon in Spain.
Whether he makes the move to Real Madrid or opts for my old
club Barcelona, he will be a big, big star."

Another one, Terry Venables:

“If Beckham goes to Barcelona he has the chance to be their
main man, the top of their hit parade. Other clubs may want
him but they don't need him as Barcelona do."

Real striker Ronaldo:

"I'd love to have Beckham here. He has the respect of all
the players."
