United have lured Sunderland reserve coach Ricky Sbragia to Old Trafford.

`I've had eight good years at Sunderland, the club has been tremendous to me and have worked hard to keep me, but this offer has been a dream come true,' Sbragia told the club's official website.

`It has taken two tortuous days to come to this decision and only time will tell whether this has been the right one.

`I'd like to thank Sunderland for the opportunity they have given me. I feel that the club are in a good position now and will do well under the new management team.'

Former England midfielder Mike Phelan was relegated from his role as first-team coach in the summer following the arrival of Carlos Queiroz.

But last night, after little-known Sunderland youth team coach Ricky Sbragia was enticed to join the United backroom staff, Phelan was back with the senior side alongside Portuguese coach Queiroz.

Ferguson is not a man prone to acknowledging mistakes, but the move signals a clear concern by the United boss that his decision to recruit Queiroz as his chief assistant at the start of this season has failed to produce the goods.
