MORE ON CAPELLO

The Times:

Capello trod carefully, citing his "maximum respect" for Ferguson, but his comments come with the United manager’s future under greater scrutiny than at any time in the past 15 years. Under the terms of his 12-month rolling contract, Ferguson’s position will be reviewed at the end of the season, and it is reasonable to suggest that Capello and Guus Hiddink, the PSV Eindhoven coach, would be among the front-runners if the board opted for a change.

"Always there are rumours about Real Madrid and Manchester United. At the moment, I want to end my project with Juventus and see them through to the summer. I am very happy with Juventus and I want to win the title and the Champions League, and we are serious contenders for both. But I would never discard a chance to work in England if the circumstances were right. The Premiership is a very attractive championship and I would love to prove that I can work in England as well as in Italy and Spain."

Capello is contracted to Juventus until June 2007, but he has stated several times in recent weeks that he would be open to discussing new "projects" at the end of the season. One explanation for the Italian’s unrest is his concern for three of his friends among the management team, Roberto Bettega, Luciano Moggi and Antonio Giraudo, who are reported to have fallen out of favour with the Fiat group, which runs the club.

United, though, have given no indication that a change of manager is on their agenda. Ferguson has stated that he hopes to stay in charge for at least another two years, but, faced with a serious downturn in performance in the Champions League as well as the Barclays Premiership in recent seasons, the club’s board is likely to give serious consideration to the situation over the coming months rather than simply allowing the manager to decide whether or not he will continue.

The Guardian:

If it is true that Manchester United owner Malcolm Glazer is scouting for potential a replacement for Sir Alex Ferguson, then the American tycoon will today be delighted to learn that Juventus boss Fabio Capello has expressed his interest in moving to Old Trafford.

The Italian is one of the few managers in Europe who can boast a more opulent trophy haul than Ferguson - having guided three different clubs to the Serie A title, won the Spanish league with Real Madrid and been European champion with AC Milan - and the 59-year-old has today issued a come-and-get-me plea so scantily clad he could almost be described as a verbal streaker.
