The United defender, who has been sidelined for nine months with ankle ligament damage, has visited a specialist and has been given the all-clear to step up his training.

"Gary was sent back to the specialist last week and the report is very good," manager Alex Ferguson has said.

"He'll be back in normal training next week and I think he'll be OK."
