Fergie:

"He will be out for four to five weeks.

"It was a typical groin injury you suffer on pitches like that.

"It was a soft surface which is unusual for this time of year that contributed to the problem.

"Gary's experience is vital to us. He has been such an important player over the year for us.

"But I believe we have adequate cover. Phil Bardsley did well once he settled in tonight, Wes Brown has played there many times and so has John O'Shea so it is not a concern."

Ricky Sbragia hopes that Phil Bardsley will be in the running after coming on as sub on Wednesday

"I thought Phil did well last night after a shaky start.

"It's opportunities like that that he has to be taking.

"It's important that he learns from them, and he knows he's not arrived yet and there's still learning to be done.

"Phil's been training with the first team from day one of pre-season, so there's definitely opportunities for him - it's just up to the manager to decide when the time comes for that."
