New Challenges

Solskjaer:

"The gaffer showed tremendous trust in the players we had last season. We hadn't won the league for three years and he only signed one player, Michael Carrick.

"That's a big sign of trust and he was right, we won the league.

"This season he's bought a few new young players in -- probably to challenge the older ones as well because you can't live off your past glory at this club.

"The young players are going to need time to settle in England, but the way we've nurtured Wayne and Cristiano, who came to the club as really young, talented players, the gaffer has made them into top world players.

"That's what you get at Manchester United, you get the challenge every day in training. They have to have that desire to improve all the time.

"I've been at this club now for 11 years and we have signed so many good players.

"You are happy every single time you sign a good player and I hope we get Carlos' registration through soon.

"He is going to be our player - that's been well documented - and we've really worked hard to get him because Carlos is a very, very good player."

He dismisses talk that rooney and Tevez are too similar:

"No single player is exactly the same.

"Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke - everyone said they can't play together, absolutely no chance, but we all know what happened to those two."

And his own fitness:

"I'm smiling again.

"I'm training with the ball, running, twisting and turning, so hopefully it won't be too long before I'm out on the pitch."

Ferdinand:

"Any year is going to be hard to win the league.

"The fact other teams have spent a lot of money poses different questions but it also raises questions about them. Will they gel? Will they become better teams? Will their managers be able to cope with having so many players in the squad? Will he be able to juggle?

"It is all ifs and buts. We will see when Christmas comes how the teams have dealt with their respective acquisitions and how they are going.

"The one thing I do know is that our manager is very experienced in that capacity, so hopefully that will give us the step in front we want."
