ALEX FERGUSON has been told he must sell before he can buy again at Manchester United.

After spending nearly £50million on midfielders Owen Hargreaves, Anderson and Nani, Fergie knows there is nothing left in the summer transfer kitty.

So the Old Trafford boss is looking to ship out forward Alan Smith, with Everton a likely destination.

And defender Gabriel Heinze will be another star heading for the exit and a switch to Real Madrid. The pair would generate about £14m for Ferguson to reinvest on players.

The Scot wants a new striker and has told Smith he can go.

Heinze will not be able to move until he returns from Argentina duty at the Copa America, which finishes on July 15.

Mikael Silvestre may also leave with Bordeaux and Lyon interested in the versatile defender.
