Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Gives Injury Update as Scott McTominay Seen Leaving Newcastle Game on Crutches

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that key midfielder Scott McTominay likely suffered some form of knee ligament damage during the Boxing Day win over Newcastle, although the club is still awaiting news on the severity of the problem.

McTominay hurt his knee early on in the contest, which saw United come from behind at Old Trafford to win 4-1, but continued until half-time when he was substituted.

“He’s done his knee ligaments probably. I don't know how bad,” Solskjaer explained at the post-match press conference, via ManUtd.com.

“The boy has got the biggest heart of the lot. He played until half-time but we know when they stiffen up after. We’ll have to find out [on Friday], how he is.”

The chances of McTominay, who was seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches after the game, being fit to face Burnley in United’s next outing now appear slim.

“You see the attitude of the kid in the beginning of the game. I’m not sure if he’ll be ready for Saturday. Probably not, but we’ve seen him recover before,” the United boss said.

McTominay has established himself as an automatic starter this season. His injury has come at the worst possible time as he has struck up a strong partnership with Fred in recent weeks that was expected to provide a foundation for Paul Pogba to thrive in a more attacking role.

Pogba, who is now expected to start against Burnley following back-to-back substitute appearances, will likely have to operate deeper as a like-for-like replacement for McTominay instead.

The win over Newcastle was just United’s third victory of the season against teams below them in the Premier League table after a bizarre record. It had threatened to go the way of so many other performances when Matty Longstaff netted first for the visitors, but an Anthony Martial brace, as well as goals from Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford, turned things around.

For 18-year-old Greenwood it was an eighth senior goal of the season so far, four of which have come in the last two weeks alone. Solskjaer is confident this is just the start.

“We’re not going to see the best of Mason for a couple of years. He’s learning, growing as a human being, he’ll grow more and more,” the United boss is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.
