Manchester Untied are eager to bring 22-year-old goalkeeper Dean Henderson back to the club next season to compete with David de Gea.
After impressing on loan with Sheffield United last season, Henderson opted for one more year with the Blades in the Premier League, and he has enjoyed a fantastic campaign so far with his side currently eighth in the table.
As a reward for his good form, The Athletic claim that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to bring Henderson back to Old Trafford and give him a genuine chance to compete with De Gea for minutes.
The Spaniard's form has undoubtedly dipped this season, and there is a fear that he may have gotten too comfortable. Current deputy Sergio Romero has impressed when needed, but he is not seen as viable competition for De Gea because of his age and a lingering knee injury.
The hope is that the threat of being replaced by Henderson will see De Gea step his game up once more, while they would also be prepared to play Henderson over the Spaniard if his performances merited it.
However, reintegrating him may not be so simple. With United preferring to stick with De Gea, Henderson would face the possibility of being stuck on the bench at Old Trafford - something which he would not be too keen on at such an early stage in his career.
It seems almost certain that there will be a number of clubs who are prepared to offer Henderson a spot in their starting lineup on a long-term basis - with Sheffield United likely heading that list - which could scupper United's plans.
Henderson is seen as one of the most promising English goalkeepers around and has recently played his way into Gareth Southgate's England setup, so it seems unlikely that he would accept a place on United's bench behind De Gea.
