“I'm in talks with United at the moment about a new
contract. Peter Kenyon is on holiday at the moment, so we'll
have to wait until he gets back before finalising things.”

Looking back on the season he said:

“I couldn't have asked for a better end to this season. The
last two months have been a dream and these two results for
Ireland have been the icing on the cake. I've played almost
60 games this season and I've never done that before, but
I'm looking forward to doing it next season.

“Everyone seems to be quite happy with me. It was Alex
Ferguson's decision to play me in all those games so he must
have been happy with me. I've played some internationals in
the middle of that and I think (Ireland boss) Brian Kerr was
happy so it was a case of being a very satisfying season for
me.

“A lot of people have said to me there was no way I could
have predicted what has happened and that is true. I think I
played 12 games last season and I was hoping that if I got
around the mid-20s in games the next term I would have been
happy because that would have been a good progression, so to
quadruple that figure from the season before and to have a
Championship medal at the end of it all has just been
fantastic.

“It's an amazing feeling. All that hard work you get through
during the year, the games that you lost and the games that
you won, all the emotion just comes out. Incredible,
especially having your mum, dad, brother and girlfriend
there, it really was a fantastic occasion. Definitely
winning the Championship and playing more than 50 games with
United was an absolute dream of a season.”
