PAPERING OVER THE CRACKS

From The Telegraph:

‘Manchester United's emphatic winning of the Carling Cup yesterday cannot paper over the cracks in their make-up this season.

Sir Alex Ferguson is still under massive pressure at Old Trafford. A trophy win like this one earns you a bit of respite but that's all - it is only until you play your next match. The fact that you are trailing the Premiership leaders by 15 points and your main rivals are still involved in the Champions League means you can't get away from it.

Expectation and demands only increase at big clubs who have been dominant. The pressure is not on you when you win your first trophy, it's when you win your 17th.

In a few weeks' time, when Chelsea are lifting the Premiership trophy and which ever team are winning the Champions League and FA Cup, the League Cup will be long forgotten. There are only two competitions to win when you have been the best or you are the best.

If Jose Mourinho just wins the Carling Cup next season nobody will say he has had a successful season.

United have to get stronger to meet the greater challenge and the big question is how are they going to do that? The only realistic way is for somebody to give you pots of money to buy players and not to make any mistakes when you've bought those players.’
