‘O'Neill's current Parkhead contract expires at the end of the season, but Celtic chairman Brian Quinn says the Irishman wants to get Sunday's Old Firm clash with Rangers out of the way before concluding negotiations to extend his stay in Glasgow.

The former Leicester and Norwich boss has led the Hoops to back-to-back league titles in Scotland and continues to be linked with United once Sir Alex Ferguson retires from management at Old Trafford.

However, Quinn is confident of tying down the highly-rated manager to Parkhead and warding off any interest from south of the border.

"We've already had preliminary discussions with Martin about what a contract might look like. Rather than be distracted by day to day pressures he wants to sit down with us and talk about terms and we're ready to do that whenever he is. I can't put a number on it, but he has been making more positive noises himself in the recent past. I trust that means he is ready to sit down and do some serious business with us."

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek, Quinn added: "It certainly won't be one year. We want to be able to agree with him that he would want to stay at Celtic for something like three or four years."
