POLICE FEAR OF VIOLENCE

500 Police officers will guard the expected 5’000 Turkish
fans going to the match tonight.

Meanwhile, Norwegian paper VG report that all students in
Sunderland have received information about potential trouble
connected to tonight’s game.

They received this letter warning them about the day of the
game:

England v Turkey soccer match, Wednesday 2 April 2003
Next Wednesday, thousands of football supporters will visit
Sunderland for the England v Turkey match, which kicks off
at the Stadium of Light at 8pm. Northumbria Police are
concerned that the match will attract some England fans to
Sunderland for the express purpose of causing trouble,
because of the murder of two English football fans in Turkey
three years ago.

A number of supporters are likely to be travelling without
tickets for the match and will end up watching the game on
television in city centre pubs. The Police are putting
extensive security measures into place, but you are advised
to be particularly aware of your personal safety on match
day and to avoid areas where supporters are likely to
congregate. In particular avoid the city centre, pubs and
bars, and areas near the football stadium throughout the day
and evening.

All University buildings (including 24/7 facilities) will
close at 8.30pm on the match day and extra buses will be
running to assist students in getting home. Two large buses
will leave St Peter’s and the Murray Library at 8.30pm. Also
there will be Students’ Union mini-buses operating between
halls of residence and the University buildings.
Also, all evening classes due to take place, for all
schools, have been cancelled for this date.
