PORTUGAL ACCUSED

'South Korea striker Ahn Jung-hwan has accused Portugal of trying to fix the
outcome of the countries' meeting last Friday by proposing a draw which
would have seen both reach the second round.

Ahn claimed the Euro 2000 semi-finalists suggested playing out a draw after
learning that the United States were losing heavily to Poland. Because of the
US defeat, a point would have sufficed for Portugal, who went out after losing
1-0 to South Korea with nine men.
"Portugal were telling us that if we finished with a draw, we would go on to the
next round together," Ahn said. "There was some tension on the pitch after
that."
