Predicting Man Utd's Starting XI for Boxing Day Premier League Clash With Newcastle

Manchester United will be looking to get back to winning ways on Boxing Day when they host an in form Newcastle side in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

Wins against Tottenham and Manchester City seemed to reassert the Red Devils as genuine top four contenders, only for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side to drop points against Everton and Watford.

With United in need of a win, here's a look at the starting XI Solskjaer could select to topple the Magpies.

Goalkeeper & Defenders

David De Gea

David de Gea (GK) - The Spaniard's form has taken a real nosedive over the last year or so. Sure, he wins United points every now and then with some spectacular saves, but the clanger against Watford was a new low. Needs a big performance on Thursday.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB) - The former Crystal Palace star has impressed with his defensive contributions thus far, but he needs to find some end product at the other end of the pitch to help United break down teams who sit deep and look to break on the counter.

Victor Lindelof (CB) - The Swede has his admirers but undoubtedly had a shaky game in the Watford defeat. Needs a big performance here.

Harry Maguire (CB) - Probably one of United's better performers against the Hornets, but the two goals conceded means there's still room for improvement. His duels with whichever forward Newcastle boss Steve Bruce deploys ought to be interesting.

Luke Shaw (LB) - Has reestablished himself as United's first choice left-back in recent weeks after Brandon Williams impressed in the England international's absence. Similar to Wan-Bissaka, Shaw needs to provide width and attacking quality from wide areas to help United past teams like Newcastle.

Midfielders

Paul Pogba

Scott McTominay (CM) - Probably United's best player so far this season, perhaps bar Marcus Rashford. The Scot drives forward from midfield and often recovers possession for his side. A quality prospect, but will need his midfield partners to chip in alongside him.

Fred (CM) - Really impressed in the recent wins against Tottenham and Manchester City, but less so in the draw against Everton and the loss to Watford. Still though, we're finally seeing what the Brazilian is capable of, and that's a start.

Paul Pogba (CM) - The headline news for United is that their World Cup-winning Frenchman is back fit. It's a massive boost and Pogba ought to help provide more of a goal threat from midfield.

Forwards

Marcus Rashford

Daniel James (RW) - Often devastating on the break, the Welshman has contributed two assists in his last three Premier League outings. Hasn't scored for United since August and will be looking to set that record straight against Newcastle.

Anthony Martial (ST) - A real gamechanger on his day, Martial has struggled in United's past few league outings. However, his goal in the 2-0 win against Manchester City was a reminder of the ruthlessness he can provide in front of goal up front.

Marcus Rashford (LW) - The 22-year-old is probably experiencing the best form of his brief career thus far. Rashford already has ten Premier League goals this season, equalling his best tally from last season, but will want to make sure he doesn't make it three games without a goal when United host the Magpies at Old Trafford on Thursday.
