PROSPECTIVE COACHES

From yesterday's programme:

"There are five of us at United doing coaching courses at the moment. So it [management] is in our minds. Myself, Keane, the two Nevs and Nicky have been doing it over the last year and it's certainly been interesting to see the other side of things.

"The PFA have been good enough to do it with us over the year. They are encouraging some of the top players to do courses while they are still in the game. With the experiences I have had, it would be a shame not to put something back. I believe that while the foreign coaches have brought a lot to our game it is important we keep the young British managers coming through, too."

The PFA's Gordon Taylor: Roy Keane and Gary Neville came out of it very well. We also got good reports on Phil Neville and the others. We are also running the course at Newcastle United where Alan Shearer and Gary Speed are two likely management lads.

"There was a time when players were ambivalent about coaching courses but now they have to have their qualifications to become coaches and managers. We want our top players to go on and become top managers. They can't all settle in Marbella and play golf. Kevin Keegan tried it and got bored stiff."
