From today's edition:

Wayne Rooney, England's great goalscoring hope for the World Cup, has turned poacher off the pitch to snatch some of his teammates' biggest sponsorship deals.

He has been so successful that his fortune has more than trebled to £20m in the past year. He and his fiancée, Coleen McLoughlin, have risen almost 50 places in the list of Britain's 100 wealthiest young people, published this week as part of The Sunday Times Rich List.

The number of footballers on the list reflects the commercial appeal of the Premiership, now the world's most watched league with a billion people a week tuning into matches. In all there are 29 footballers out of the 100 people in the list, an increase from 27 last year.

Rooney, 20, has settled the £700,000 gambling debt he owed to a business partner of his fellow England forward Michael Owen, but he has put one over on his strike partner by lifting the sponsorship contract Owen had with the supermarket giant Asda during the Euro 2004 tournament. It will be worth as much as £3m.

Manchester United forward Rooney is also among the favourites to snatch the £1m-a-year contract that David Beckham, the England captain, had with Vodafone, who will also sponsor United until the end of the season.

As well as stealing a march on Owen at Asda, Rooney has a deal with Nike worth £5m over 10 years, a £1m contract with Coca-Cola to rival Beckham's deal with Pepsi, and a £3m deal with Electronic Arts, which produces the computer game Fifa '06 starring Rooney and Ronaldinho, the Brazil and Barcelona star.

His contract with Manchester United, currently worth £50,000 a week, is likely to be re-negotiated after the World Cup to put him on a salary close to Owen's £100,000 weekly wage at Newcastle United.

Rooney's United contract allows him up to five "global brand" commercial partners. The fifth is likely to be a telecommunications firm such as Vodafone. In addition, he has signed a £5m deal to write five books over the course of his career.

McLoughlin, also 20, has signed her own publishing deal worth about £400,000 and a separate deal with Nike to promote a range of women's sportswear. Together they have seen their fortune increase by £14m since last year's evaluation of £6m.
