QUIT?
Last Updated : 26-Nov-2004 by EditorBut luckily for Wales he's decided to carry on for another few years. "When
Sparky left — and Gary Speed and Mark Pembridge retired from international
football — it crossed my mind to call it a day, too.
"I'd played in the Under-21s with them and then grown up playing alongside them for Wales for 13 or 14 years.
"When I knew they weren't going to be around it made me feel that maybe I
should go."
Fergie helped him make up his mind.
"The gaffer was happy to see me playing for Wales for as long as I wanted to and that was good to hear.
"It was my decision and mine alone but, in the end, I knew I definitely wanted to carry on.
"It's the start of an exciting new era under a new coach and I want to be part of it.
"I still have a chance of reaching a major finals with Wales and I thought it would be too hasty to walk away now.
"Physically I feel great and I genuinely think I can carry on for the next four,
maybe five years.
"My first target is to reach 50 caps — and that's one game away — and then we'll see how many more I get."
