Raking it in like Beckham

The film has grossed over £5million in its first two weeks of release, with over £2million of that coming in its first weekend - eclipsing popular British films such as The Full Monty and Billy Elliott.

"I was really nervous at first and thought the cinemas where it was showing would be empty," said director Gurinder Chadha.

"But during the first weekend, practically every screening was sold out, which is unbelievable.

"We got some great reviews and we also got some not so great ones. But I tend to think that a review of a film usually tells you more about the person reviewing it than the film itself."

Lets hope that the film inspires more active interest in sport amongst the asian population, who are sadly underepresented at all levels of the game.
