Real Madrid considering Edinson Cavani loan signing

Real Madrid are interested in signing Edinson Cavani on loan in January, after having previously considered a move during the summer transfer window.

Real have made a strong start to the season and currently top La Liga, having not lost a game. The Champions League has been more of a struggle, with Los Blancos only narrowly beating Inter before falling to a shocking 2-1 home defeat to first-timers Sheriff on Tuesday.

In the latter game, Real's lack of attacking options from the bench was made clear with Luka Jovic and Rodrygo both coming on and struggling to make an impact.

As reported by El Nacional, club president Florentino Perez was keen on adding to the squad in this department in the summer, as evidenced by their pursuit of Kylian Mbappe. When that deal was unsuccessful, he remained keen to bring in a lower-cost striker - only for Ancelotti to refuse, keeping faith in the likes of Jovic and Mariano.

Among the options considered were Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Falcao, as well as Cavani. Real could be ready to go back in for the latter in January, as he has fallen down the pecking order at United considerably since the return of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Although Cavani's start to the campaign was hampered by injury, the early signs suggest that he is unlikely to feature heavily this season. Real would appreciate his contributions, as they look for a solid backup for Karim Benzema.

Cavani showed he can still compete at the top level last term, managing 10 Premier League goals in 26 appearances - many of which came from the bench. He also starred in the Europa League, managing six goals and three assists in just five games.

He finished the season as United's first-choice striker but Ronaldo has since usurped him. Anthony Martial and the soon to be returning Marcus Rashford also increase competition for playing time.
