Real Madrid make key decision over Paul Pogba pursuit

Real Madrid have been tipped to prioritise other positions instead of launching a formal pursuit of Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba, who is on course to be a free agent in the summer.

Despite the possibility of being able to land a player of Pogba’s calibre without having to pay a transfer fee, Real appear to be keen to spend their money elsewhere.

Pogba has been linked with a move to Madrid for literal years, but Marca now writes that Los Blancos do not intend to bring him to the club and instead are happy with existing midfield options Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Fede Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga.

Part of the plan for the coming months appears to be agreeing a contract renewal with Modric, who turns 37 next September, while the club also seems conscious of allowing homegrown talent Antonio Blanco room to develop at first-team level.

Real are said to appreciate Pogba’s quality but have concerns he wouldn’t be the right fit.

Pogba is able to sign a pre-contract agreement in January but is very much keeping his options open for now – even agreeing a new contract in Manchester has not yet been ruled out.

90min recently revealed that the 28-year-old is yet to make a decision on his future beyond the end of the season. Agent Mino Raiola is keeping potential suitors informed of the situation but interested clubs still remain unaware of Pogba’s desire at this stage.

Raiola’s ideal scenario is a multi-club bidding war, although the intention is for that to uncover the ‘right’ offer for the player at this stage of his career, rather than simply choosing the biggest offer.

Now that Real Madrid are potentially out of the race, although speculation will persist regardless, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus would be the most likely suitors if Pogba moves on. Finances ruled Barcelona out of the equation some time ago.
