REDS PLAYING CATCH UP

Gary Neville in the MEN:

"We are seven points behind in the championship and that is all we are thinking about at this time. Even after four games that is a lot to claw back on teams.

"It is a massive gap and we have to do something about it. We have to start performing better and creating more chances. Three goals in four league matches is not good enough.

"We have to start winning. People talk about players coming back but they might never come back, they might pick up other injuries, we might get more injuries to other players, it might never happen.

"So we have to make sure the players who go out there perform better than we have done.

"The championship might be over by the time players come back. We might be too far behind. We have to start performing now. It is not about three, four or five weeks' time.

"We need to start winning when we get back from the international break.
On the Everton game:

"Everyone has to take a chance, show something or create something. We did hit the woodwork three times but that is not good enough. You can hit the woodwork 10 times but you have to score a goal. It's a cause for concern that there didn't look like there was a goal coming. We are usually finishing strong at Old Trafford in the last 20 minutes, with relentless and incessant pressure.

"To be fair we did that at Blackburn, but in this one our legs left us in those last 20 minutes. We didn't have enough to keep going.

"There are no excuses. We should be beating the opponents that were out there quite comfortably. I can't remember a shot they had on target.

"In the second-half at Blackburn we did very well, and should have been more ruthless and scored more. But here we didn't get anywhere near that.

"It could have been a lot worse on Saturday.

"With all the possession we had at Ewood and a 62 per cent possession count against Everton, and the possession we had against Chelsea and Norwich, with the quality we have we should have created and scored more.

"We have just not shown enough quality in our performances so far. It is as simple as that.

"Admittedly, we have not had a settled side for one reason or another, but still the players out there on the pitch have to do better than that."
