In an exclusive intwerview with the Sun Rio Ferdinand talks about Alan Smith, his move from Leeds and how the Leeds fans will have to get over it.

"People should understand Alan is doing what is best for his career.

"I know Leeds fans are upset — they were like that with me when I went.

"But Alan is doing what is right for him. He deserves a break. He has given
everything for Leeds.

"He is not letting anyone down. He could not have done more to try and keep
them in the Premiership.

"People should not be so bitter. With Manchester United, he has the chance to
win the big trophies in England and Europe.

"He was not going to get that at Leeds, who had to sell him anyway because of
their financial problems.

"And not even those fans expected him to stay at the club now it is in the First
Division.

"Why should he go to a club where he would not be happy just because it is not
Manchester United?

"He is moving to one of the biggest clubs in the world. If some of those Leeds
fans were in his position I bet they would make the same decision.

"It is easy for them to say they would not because they are never likely to be in his place.

"But I'm sure, if they had the opportunity, they would jump at the chance.

"It is not as if the two sides will be direct rivals next season. They will be in
different divisions."

Rio has it easy, he doesn't have to go back to the flock. He continues

"For Alan it is probably a lot harder, with his family still in the area.

"But by making a move like this he has shown what character he has. Those are the type of players United want."

And on where he will fit into the team:

"He is a good target man, links the play well, has plenty of skill and knows how to finish.

"His attitude is first class as well. There have been concerns about his
temperament in the past but he is learning to calm that down.

"As you grow up you realise it is important to stay on the pitch. You cannot do
anything from the stands.

"Alan will love it at Old Trafford. I never regretted the move for a moment — and I am sure he won't either."
