Rio Ferdinand Blasts Man Utd as Fans Leave Early During Desperate Burnley Defeat

Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has blasted his old club in the wake of Wednesday night’s dismal home defeat against Burnley, which saw many fans leave Old Trafford early, having passionately chanted against the club’s ownership during the game.

‘Love United, hate Glazers’ and ‘We want United back’ were two of the chants that rang around Old Trafford during the contest in reference to the growing fan opposition to the controversial owners and the use of the club first and foremost as cash cow and business.

‘Stand up if you hate the Glazers’ was also heard not long after Burnley scored their second goal of the game, which saw many of those inside the stadium rise from their seats.

United’s senior management structure is not fit for purpose and anger has been increasingly directed away from the players and coaches and towards executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and other high ranking officials.

“I’m sitting here embarrassed. It’s embarrassing to be here seeing this,” the retired defender said in his role as a pundit during BT Sport’s coverage of the game.

“You can’t defend this. Fans were walking out after 85 minutes. People at the top need to see this and make changes and put a plan in place. Young kids in schools around the country won’t be wearing Man Utd shirts, they won’t be wanting to come here and see this.

“Nothing there suggests this is laying the foundation of future. I don’t see a pathway. Where’s the target set on the wall, saying this is how we’re going to get there? Money has been spent willy-nilly in the past seven years, what’s to show?”

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who retains the support of the Old Trafford board and will not be sacked, argued that the performance in last weekend’s defeat against Liverpool was a ‘stride forward’ and showed progress. But even he couldn’t dress up the Burnley display and admitted the urgent need for new players in the transfer market.

“I’m responsible for what is happening on the pitch, we’re looking to strengthen, we need to strengthen. We know that,” Solskjaer said after the final whistle.

“We are working to improve and get players in. Hopefully, we can get something over the line. These players are stretched, and I’ve got no complaints on any of them – they give everything they’ve got.”

But improvement with new signings will only come if the board can change the habit of seven years and actually properly deliver in the transfer market.

Following the defeat to Liverpool, Gary Neville called for Woodward and others to be sacked after building a mediocre squad on the second highest wage bill in the world.

“I’m struggling to understand why the ownership have persisted in trusting that management team to oversee the building of a Premier League title winning team since Sir Alex left,” Neville said.

“If you don’t lose your job for essentially overseeing that investment, that wage bill, and putting that team out on the pitch then I have to say something is really wrong.”
