RIO STILL 'THE' TARGET

Peter Ridsdale has said that Leeds had no intention of selling Rio Ferdinand
and insisted: "We want to build a team around him."

Ray Fell, the chairman of the Leeds Supporters Club, was so concerned over
rumours linking the England defender with a £30million-plus move to
Manchester United or Inter Milan, that he had a meeting with Ridsdale on
Friday.

"I think most of us are resigned to losing Lee Bowyer this summer because he
wants to leave, but Rio is a different kettle of fish," said Fell. "The chairman
told me he had received no offers for Rio or anyone else and had no intention
to sell him."

Ridsdale confirmed: "We've had no offers for Rio and I am not going to go
down the road of speculating about that. We want to build a team around him
at Leeds."

Despite the denials reliable sources at OT say that Ferguson has made Ferdinand his top target.

Meanwhile another rumoured target, Damien Duff, has also denied any contact with United: "I haven't even heard anything about Liverpool or Manchester United other than the speculation in the media."

Sunderland have turned down a £16m bid for Kevin Phillips from Aston Villa and reports in Ireland continue to link United with Steve Finnan.
