"They have a decent run-in, they have that six-point cushion and they look determined not to be caught. But one thing they had eight years ago, which they may lack now, is a surfeit of prolific goalscorers.

"With Louis Saha and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer injured and Henrik Larsson going back to Sweden, a lot of the responsibility will fall on Wayne Rooney and Ronaldo.

"Rooney's a fantastic player, but he's not an out-and-out striker. In 1999, United had four natural goalscorers - Cole, Yorke, Sheringham and Solskjaer - to get them over the line."
