ROLL ON THE QUARTERS

Fergie on last night:

"I was satisfied with the result. We improved the tempo in the second half and I thought we deserved the result on our second-half performance.

"It was difficult to pick which side was going to do us justice to make sure no-one can point fingers at us.

"You saw what happened in Cyprus when we played Maccabi Haifa and we got a lot of criticism - and we don't want that.

"The effort tonight was very good for the 90 minutes - and that was very important.

“We don't want to lose anywhere, whether it is at home or away. Our consistency in the Champions League has been very good. We have only suffered one defeat in the last two years when I played an experimental side against Maccabi Haifa earlier in the season.

“We could have been three or four up early in that game but we eventually lost 3-0 and received a lot of criticism. The result in Turin takes the weight off our shoulders in terms of the other teams in the group so we will look again at the team we will take to Spain next week.”

On Neville’s ‘goal’:

"It's still a goal - and the important thing is he was trying to score all the time. He had two or three shots - and if you don't try you don't score.”

On Darren Fletcher:

“Darren has a chance. He is a year older than Kieran and that probably helped him last night. He has had a difficult start to his career at the club, suffering a broken foot which fractured again when he came back too soon, then missing 10 weeks with an ankle injury.

“He was also physically very immature. He is still skin and bone really but he has very good ability and there is a lot of common sense about his play.

“In contrast, Kieran is still a youth team player and he found it difficult. When you bring young players in like that, they don't always respond simply because we are trying a team which has never played together before.

“It made it difficult for the lad but he will be okay. His day will come.”

Gary Neville:

"I don't know if it will go down as my goal but I've had enough chances over the last few years. I'm pleased because it's never nice losing at Old Trafford. It was important not to lose.”

Christian Gross:

“Manchester United have a hard programme coming up but they are fully focused on playing in the final at Old Trafford and they have a good chance of winning it.

"We played an almost perfect game in the first half but were unlucky to concede a goal and then struggled to get back to the level we had reached because there were so many tired legs.

"The result in Turin went against us but it doesn't detract from an excellent performance here.”
