Roma want to sign Man Utd's Alex Telles on loan - but deal is 'complicated'

New AS Roma coach Jose Mourinho is looking to raid his former club Manchester United by signing defender Alex Telles on loan this summer, although a deal for the Brazilian is thought to be 'complicated'.

The Giallorossi are on the hunt for a temporary replacement for Leonardo Spinazzola after the Italian left-back suffered an achilles tendon injury at Euro 2020 - one that will keep him out of action for a large portion of the next season.

And according to Fabrizio Romano, Roma have set their sights on Man Utd outcast Telles and will make a move for the Brazilian in 'the next days', as Mourinho sees the 28-year-old as the perfect short-term fix to their full-back issues.

However, Romano adds that a move for the former Porto man will be 'complicated', as the Red Devils have expressed no interest in letting their defender leave ahead of the new campaign. The club's reluctance to sell means Telles would have to force a move through himself if he wants to go in search of first-team football.

Telles joined the Red Devils at the start of the 2020/21 campaign, and he was seen as the direct replacement for an under-pressure Luke Shaw. However, the England defender hit new heights at Old Trafford, forcing his teammate to watch on from the sidelines for the majority of the campaign.

Shaw's impressive performances at Euro 2020 suggest that Telles will remain second choice next season, and he will have to settle for being a bit-part player under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

That could convince him to leave the club on loan and prove his worth in Italy, and the prospect of playing under Mourinho at Roma could be appealing to the left-back. However, Man Utd's frosty relationship with their former coach could put the move in doubt, should they be unwilling to help out the Portuguese boss.
