Jorge Mendes told the Daily Express: "In three years Cristiano Ronaldo will be the best player in the world. I've got no doubts about that.

"I think he will stay but I also have to do the best for my client."

"He signed the existing contract at the age of 18, after a handful of games for Sporting, but now he has developed into a star.

"Cristiano has huge ambition. At Sporting, there were lots of clubs after him, all the big names from Italy and Spain.

"But when I sat down with Alex Ferguson I knew it was the right choice because he told me that Cristiano would play one week and then have a rest, then play, then rest and that he would not be burned out."

The Times:

As fearful of losing him as they are surprised by the speed of his progress, Manchester United are expected to bring forward negotiations with Cristiano Ronaldo over a new contract. Along with Wayne Rooney, Ronaldo has established himself as one of the jewels in United’s crown but unlike the England striker, Ronaldo is among the poorer paid of United’s first team, with weekly wages of about £14,000. That does not sit comfortably with the 20-year-old Portugal winger, who is understood to want a deal that reflects his worth to the team.

United normally open negotiations only when players have two years left to run on their contracts, but in an attempt to appease Ronaldo, who has three years of a five-year deal remaining, as well as ward off interest from other clubs, most notably Real Madrid, United could begin talks as early as the autumn. Any new deal could see Ronaldo’s wages quadruple to almost £60,000 a week.
